Job Description
The Transmission Modeling Engineer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and validating power system models that represent our electric transmission network. These models support transmission planning, reliability compliance, tariff studies, and interregional coordination. The role requires collaboration with internal engineering teams, stakeholders, and member utilities to ensure accurate and reliable transmission system representations.

Job Responsibilities / Typical Day in the Role

  • Transmission Services Engineer leads the modeling and analysis of our electrical transmission system. This role involves performing engineering analyses, coordinating special studies, and supporting the Transmission Services department in collaboration with our staff, members, and customers. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of transmission system planning and the ability to apply engineering theory to real-world situations.
  • Develop, update, and validate transmission planning modelsand associated data for our electrical transmission system.
  • Coordinate data collection and exchange with transmission owners, generator owners, and internal planning staff to support accurate model builds and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., NERC modeling standards).
  • Perform technical analyses using power system simulation tools to support Integrated Transmission Planning (ITP), tariff studies, NERC reliability compliance studies, and special engineering studies.
  • Maintain and improve model development processes, tools, and documentation to ensure consistent, efficient, and repeatable model builds.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams, stakeholders, and industry working groups on transmission planning data, model validation, and study results.
  • Prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations summarizing model results, methodology, and recommendations.
  • Represent our transmission modeling discussions as needed with internal teams, members, and regulatory bodies.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited program (or equivalent experience).
  • Solid understanding of power system modeling and transmission planning principles.
  • Experience with power systems analysis tools (e.g., PSSĀ®E, PSLF, PowerWorld, or similar).
  • Strong analytical, technical writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multiple stakeholders and team members.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in utility or RTO/ISO transmission planning and modeling environments.
  • Knowledge of NERC, FERC, and company tariff and planning criteria.
  • Familiarity with data management and scripting languages (e.g., Python, SQL) for model automation and data handling.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or equivalent technical certification
